HRG Councillors arrange Youth Council visit to Houses of Parliament
2 November 2009

The visit involved an early start for the coach journey to London and a guided tour of both the House of Commons and Lords as well as seeing the preparations for the Queen’s State opening of Parliament which took place later in November. All the Youth Councillors from Henley’s schools, youth organisations and college enjoyed the trip and asked many interesting questions of the guides. Also joining in the visit were 10 teaching and support staff from many of the schools and clubs.

After the visit the Youth Councillors spent over an hour talking with John Howell, MP about his daily work and special interest. This very interesting session was followed by a packed lunch on the Embankment before re-joining the coach for the journey back to Henley.

HRG Cllr Allan Follett said, “The young councillors represented Henley very well and I am sure they had an enjoyable and informative day.  It was good to hear about the history of our Parliament and also learn about the day to day work of a present day MP. Who knows perhaps one of these young councillors may someday become a politician and perhaps take his or her seat at Westminster!”

The Henley Youth Council was established 3 years ago by HRG Councillors who wanted to give the young residents a voice and ability to feed up ideas and concerns to local authorities. Over these years the Youth Council, which has members from all primary, and secondary schools as well as youth organisations, has added its voice to decisions on many items including road safety, play equipment, crime and disorder issues, litter and youth leisure opportunities. Minutes and decision from the Youth Council become an agenda item for the Town & Community Committee of the Town Council and are used to help the Council reach decisions.  The Youth Council meets 5 times in each academic year and elects its own Chair and Clerk.
